Abstract

Objective

To analyze the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for patient and family centered care in a pediatric hospital unit.

Methods

Reflection study based on the principles of patient and family centered care.

Results

The COVID-19 pandemic imposed the need to restrict the circulation of people in hospital services, due to its high transmissibility. In this way, new rules were established, removing the family, with consequences for the patient, the family and the healthcare team. It is observed that the principles that underlie the CCPF are being set aside, with the risk of a setback in this approach to care. It is recommended to maintain new ways and strategies of communication with the family to guarantee their right to information, with respect and dignity, ensuring their involvement and participation in care and decision-making and collaboration.

Conclusion

It is up to managers and health professionals to seek creative ways to maintain the connection with the patient and family, based on the principles of this care approach to achieve the best health results.
