Nursing care and pain management in hospitalized children: literature review

Abstract
The objective of this study was to describe the methods, skills and difficulties of Nursing staff for the management of pain in hospitalized children. Literature review in Portuguese language carried out in the period between 2003 and 2015 with journals annexed in SciELO and LILACS databases using the keywords: “saúde da criança”, “enfermagem pediátrica”, “terapia” and “dor”. Several scales for pain assessment can be applied according to age, development, preference, and clinical state of the child. Nursery difficulties were related to observation, perception, valorization of pain expression and evolution, and register in the medical record. Professionals’ capacitation required sensitivity to the problem, communication skills with the child and his/her family, knowledge, and use of appropriate scales, register, and management of pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods.
