Preschool child with cancer: manifestations expressed by the Dramatic Therapeutic Play

Abstract

Qualitative study in Pediatric Oncology Institute wich aim was better understand the manifestations of preschool with cancer. Data were collected through Therapeutic Play Dramatic sessions and allowed us to know the manifestations of the subjects who expressed their autonomy, fears and anxieties to dramatize situations of their daily family life and the treatment to which they are submitted. “Death” was an important element in the play session related to invasive procedures, demonstrating that the sick child feels the deterioration of his body with the progress of the disease and treatment effects. In addition, participants showed satisfaction when playing expressing happiness and conveying a relief sense. The study highlighted the importance of therapeutic play in nursing care, as a means of communication between children and staff, instrument maker attachment and a means for the child to achieve catharsis.
