DOI: 10.31508/1676-3793200400010
Abstract
Violence is a well recognized public health problem. In this context, the present condition of children’s and adolescent health is requiring a thoughtful consideration and positioning of health professionals and especially pediatric nurses. This paper’s objectives were (a) to report a reflection activity on violence and its implications for pediatric nurses, and (b) to update a discussion on violence, its relationship with health and its prevention. The impact of the terrorists’ attacks of September 2001 was discussed with undergraduate nursing students of a Child Health Course, exploring the issue of violence in daily life and its implications for child health care. Pediatric nurses can educate and collaborate with parents and educators by explaining the biological and psychosocial needs of the child and the adolescent, as well as strategies to meet them, making a contributing to violence prevention and promoting their integral development.
