The newborn with meningomyelocele: the construction of mother-baby bonding

Abstract

It was studied the mothers’perceptions about baby bonding by facing with meningomyelocele congenital disorder. The aims was to identify the mothers’ feeling about those children, and their difficulty in building bonding to them. The data had been gathered through semi-structuralized interviews, with mothers of children with meningomyelocele, under eight months old, hospitalized at neonatal unit, Rio de Janeiro. The results showed that the more mothers were engaged in the current and future treatment of their babies the more were their bonding to them. The bond was built based on individual construction according to each mothers characteristics, such as commitment, sensitivity, wish and so forth
