Child’S safety conditions in the pediatric emergency facility at teaching hospital

Abstract
Objective:
To evaluate if the child’s safety conditions of a pediatric emergency room were in accordance to the Brazilian federal regulations regarding its infrastructure and functioning.
Method:
Observational study. Data were collected in an emergency room service during seven moments of observation. A check list tool was developed to facilitate the observational aspects regarding the structure and functioning of this environment of care. Data were analyzed by absolute and relative frequency.
Findings:
It was shown that from 51 check list items observed, only 23 (45.09%) in the ward and 15 (29.41%) in the ER were in accordance to the Brazilian federal regulations.
Conclusion:
The currently conditions of structure and functioning of this pediatric emergency room service may contribute to the occurrence of preventable accidents in hospitalized children. It is necessary to pay more attention to these questions to move a culture of safety in this environment of care.
