Abstract

Objective:

To understand the mothers’ experiences during the hospitalization of premature newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a public hospital in Feira de Santana, Bahia.

Method:

qualitative and descriptive study that complied with the Resolution 196/96 of the National Health Council and was made through semi-structured interviews with eight mothers in the period from October 2009 to January 2010.

Results:

The data were analyzed using the content analysis and the results showed that the mother experiences grief, despair and shock at the premature birth, but with each passing day the neonatal unit is considered essential in the premature recovery.

Conclusion:

The mother feels responsible for the child care and she changes her routine and professional activities in favor of staying together the infant. It is needed to incorporate other family members in neonatal care, for the optimization and integrality of healthcare and support to mothers’ needs during this process.
