Feelings of mothers during hospitalization of children: a qualitative study

Abstract

Objective:

Understanding the feelings of these mothers, in the daily of hospitalization of their children.

Methods:

Qualitative study, conducted with ten mothers in a reference hospital in the countryside of Ceará, in December of 2008 through semi-structured interview. Data were organized according to content analysis. Respecting the ethical aspects of research in humans.

Results:

It was evident especially feelings of sadness, pity, pain, fatigue, desire of being in place of the child and the courage to face this moment. As difficulties they mentioned concern with the house, although aware of the role in the recovery of children.

Conclusions:

In holistic care, we believe in the need for recreational and educational strategies, and conditions conducive to the comfort and minimize fatigue for mothers to stay with their hospitalized children.
