Abstract

This is a descriptive and exploratory study to analyze how the child with Down Syndrome expresses his/her needs to the mother. The sample consisted of nine mothers who had children with Down Syndrome with ages ranging from one to twelve months. The results showed that mothers offer to their infants care related to body hygiene and feeding but only a few recognize the need for stimulation and socialization. Regarding acknowledgement of children with Down Syndrome’s needs, the cry was the most mentioned; most of the mothers did not report the difficulties to understand and recognize the needs of their infant regarding their physiological needs.
