Abstract

This is a quantitative descriptive exploratory study. The goals were to characterize children Diabetes mellitus type I who were under intensive insulin treatment and presented insulin lipodystrophy. Data were gather from 104 children’s chart (under 13 years old), attended at the Instituto da Criança, from 2004 to 2005. Variables analyzed were: previous knowledge about diabetes, insulin (type, administration way, self-administration, sites used and rotation) and lipodystrophy incidence. All children received previous counseling about diabetes; the most used insulin was NPH and Regular; most of the children used a syringe, and a large part self-applied it; and the most used sites for administration were the abdomen, arms, thighs, and hips. It was observed that the children neither perform site rotation in a proper way nor perform rotation at all, and also showed greater incidence of lipodystrophy in the form of abdominal lipohypertrophy. This study reinforce the issue regarding insulin administration, so that complications can be prevented and a better life quality can be provided to children with diabetes.
