Abstract

Prospective study, descriptive, quantitative, develoed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a school hospital of the city of Recife-PE. The objective was to analyze the frequency of preterm births in the NICU and the factors associated with prematurity. The population consisted of 140 records of preterm newborn. The data were collected between July to September 2008. A questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect. Ranking the biological variables of the newborn (weight, sex and gestational age); obstetric (diabetes, eclampsia, maternal age, calving interval, number of parity, preeclampsia and quantity of prenatal visits); socioeconomic (education and family income), behavioral (smoking and alcoholism). There was a female predominance (54.3%), birth weight greater than 1500g (67.2%) and gestational age over 30 weeks (78.5%). It was concluded: among the obstetric factors were prevalent in pre-eclampsia (30%); in the socioeconomic, 21.4% with family income below one minimum wage; in behavioral, 81.4% did not use alcohol during pregnancy and 2% were smokers.
