Abstract
This study aimed to know the reasons for non completion of the kangaroo position by the professional staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in the interior of Bahia. This is a qualitative study that was made through semi- structured interviews with fifteen health professionals at the neonatal unit previously referred. The content analysis showed that the severity of premature newborns and the use of ventilatory support are limiting factors for the realization of the kangaroo position in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Note also the lack of information regarding the method as an obstacle to the achievement of the kangaroo position. It is needed the development of care protocols in this unit, which enhance the skin to skin contact between infant premature and the puerpera, through the kangaroo position and the discussion about this method and its clinical application, in order to care guided by the principles of humanization of quality and excellence.
