Abstract

Quantitative research, retrospective, documentary that aimed to describe the in hospital morbidity and mortality of newborns admitted at neonatal intensive care unit and identify the main causes of hospitalization and its association with birth weight and gestational age. Data were subjected to statistical analysis. Prematurity and respiratory distress were the main reasons for hospitalization and neonatal infections was major morbidity cause during hospitalization. Approximately, 57% of newborns were male, 66% preterm and 39% had low birth weight. The neonatal mortality rate was 10.3%, highlighting the prematurity and neonatal infections. It is recommended that this study contributes to the service, guiding the planning of health actions, especially with respect to neonatal infection rate in the neonatal intensive care unit. Noteworthy is the investment in qualifying the to hospital records containing complete and legible information.
