Instruments for pain assessment in children and adolescents with cognitive impairment: An integrative review

Abstract

Objective:

To analyze the scientific production on the instruments for pain assessment in children and adolescents with cognitive impairment.

Methods:

An integrative literature review. Publications on the topic were searched in the Virtual Health Library, in the Scielo electronic library and in the Medline database (via Pubmed), from 2014 to 2019, in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The final sample included five studies, which answered the guiding question: Which are the instruments for pain assessment in children and adolescents with cognitive impairment available in the literature?

Results:

Five validated and reliable instruments were found for pain assessment in this clientele.

Conclusion:

The use of valid and reliable instruments to identify pain in children and adolescents with cognitive impairment can contribute to the early recognition of pain, thus improving the quality of care provided.
