Abstract

Objective

To analyze maternal knowledge and practices in relation to complementary feeding.

Methods

Descriptive study, carried out in Basic Health Units in the rural area of the municipality of Ipiranga do Piauí-PI, with 15 mothers of children between 6 and 24 months who were undergoing childcare consultations. Data were collected by interview in a quiet environment free of interruptions and analyzed using the Bardin Analysis technique, comprising the following phases: pre-analysis, exploration of the material and treatment of the results.

Results

Although mothers know the importance of a diet based on nutritious foods, the practice of offering processed foods and sweetened beverages was observed.

Conclusion

The knowledge of the investigated mothers about complementary feeding is limited, as evidenced by the introduction of non-recommended foods to the child’s diet and inadequate feeding practices.
