Abstract

Objective

To characterize the follow-up programs for high-risk children in the state of Mato Grosso and in Distrito Federal.

Methods

A descriptive and exploratory study with a quantitative approach, carried out from April to July 2021 in the state of Mato Grosso and in Distrito Federal. The data were collected from the National Registry of Health Institutions and by means of interviews with the professionals in charge of the programs identified. For the analysis, the indicative elements of the phenomenon under study were sought in the professionals’ statements. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Júlio Muller University Hospital under opinion No. 3,359,087 and by its counterparts belonging to the Health Sciences School of the University of Brasília (CEP/FS/UnB) and to the Distrito Federal State Department (FEPECS/SES/DF), with CAAE No. 14164719.1.2003.0030.

Results

Distrito Federal has eight follow-up services for high-risk children, all linked to public hospitals. Only three outpatient services were identified in Mato Grosso, two of which are located in the capital city of the state and linked to university hospitals. Most of the programs lacked a pre-established consultation schedule, own care protocols, a full multiprofessional team and articulation with primary Health Care.

Conclusion

Despite the importance of following-up high-risk children, the effective implementation of this assistance modality in Mato Grosso and in Distrito Federal still presents weaknesses, either due to the absence of a multiprofessional team and of care protocols or to the number of programs or their geographical distribution, which fail to meet the demand of high-risk children from all the regions, in both states. Providing the population with access to a comprehensive and good quality care service is one of the principles of the Unified Health System, which includes from assistance provided by a multiprofessional team to articulation and integration of the services involved in care.
