Abstract

Objective

To identify the knowledge and difficulties that nursing professionals face in carrying out neonatal screening in Primary Care.

Methods

Qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study, carried out in basic units in a medium-sized city in Mato Grosso, Brazil, with nurses and nursing technicians who participate in the performance of neonatal screening. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the thematic analysis technique.

Results

Presented in two thematic axes: “Professionals’ knowledge about the purpose of neonatal screening”; “Difficulties of neonatal screening in basic health care for nursing professionals”. There is a difficulty in the early screening of the diseases screened by the National Neonatal Screening Program, as well as the fragility of the guidelines passed on by the professionals, the use of unsuitable materials for carrying out the heel prick test and the lack of articulation between the health care services. health.

Conclusion

It is important to create intervention mechanisms that favor the quality of neonatal care in the context of Primary Care, for faster identification of congenital diseases. the NT flow within the health service network.
