The experience of the family caregiver of a child with a tracheostomy at home

Abstract
Objective
To describe the experience of a family caregiver of a child with a tracheostomy at home.
Methods
Descriptive research of qualitative approach with five family caregiver in a municipality in the North of Santa Catarina State (Brazil) on the year 2018. The data were collected through interviews and analyzed according to a thematic analysis.
Results
Six thematic categories were created: experiencing the delivery of news: the necessity of performing a tracheostomy in their child; receiving training and orientation prior to their child’s hospital discharge; the experience of transition from hospital care to home care; taking care of a child with special health needs and a tracheostomy: family routine; family support in the care of a child with a tracheostomy and building strategies to possible emergency situations at home.
Conclusion
Family caregiver need to receive proper orientation, emotional preparation and training for home-care during their child stay at the hospital. At home care they need continuous professional and family support.
