Abstract

Objective:

To evaluate the breastfeeding type of newborn infants of diabetic mothers throughout the hospitalization period in a Rooming-in Care facility.

Methods:

A cross-section preliminary study was carried out with premature newborn infants of single-pregnancy women who had been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus before or during pregnancy, and who delivered their children in the Obstetrics Unit from a University Hospital in São Paulo. We did not include pregnant women with counter indications for breastfeeding. We collected data by means of interviews and survey of medical records, using an instrument prepared for the study.

Results:

The rate of children born from diabetic mothers was 16.23% – 45% of them remained in a Rooming-in Care facility and only one among the four hospitalized children was on exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusion: The rate of exclusive breastfeeding was low; therefore, we need more pieces of evidence to control and decrease the use of artificial milk among children of diabetic mothers.
