Knowledge assessment of children with type 1 diabetes: proposal for an instrument
DOI: 10.31508/1676-3793201500012
Abstract
Objectives:
a) Prepare two instruments to assess knowledge of children with type 1 DM on preparation and administration of insulin and capillary blood glucose monitoring b) Check the knowledge of children with type 1 DM on preparation and administration of insulin and capillary blood glucose monitoring.
Method:
This is a quantitative, descriptive study. It included 24 children with type 1 DM, aged four to 18 years. Data were collected by means of instruments following the steps on blood glucose monitoring techniques, preparation and administration of insulin.
Results:
We found that most participants achieved satisfactory scores for blood glucose monitoring (54.1%) and preparation and administration of insulin (52.1%), but error frequency was still high. Therefore, it is imperative that continuing Diabetes education be implemented, based on the needs identified by the initial assessment of knowledge and the health behaviors related to the illness exhibited by children.
