DOI: 10.31508/1676-3793201500004
Abstract
Objective:
To understand the perception of nurses regarding the use of Therapeutic Play (TP) in the pediatric units of a teaching hospital and to identify factors that interfere with its use.
Method:
A descriptive study, quantitative and qualitative, whose subjects were 20 nurses. The quantitative data analysis considered the absolute and relative frequency of the variables; qualitative data underwent qualitative content analysis.
Results:
Although nurses recognize the benefits of playing / TP and consider us necessary for the nursing care to facilitate the dialogue with the child, recognize his/her feelings and prepare for procedures, 46.6% of those who are aware of the service, seldom use it. This is because nurses are overwhelmed with activities, lack of time, material and appropriate environment, besides their own ignorance and also due to the fact that colleagues and the institution ignore or depreciate its use. However, nurses expressed a desire to enable themselves to use it in care practice.
Conclusion:
We stress the importance of conducting nursing training programs on the TP to enable nurses to use it, aiming to its systematic implementation.
