Abstract

Case report regarding the use of vascular ultrasonography (USV), by nurses, for implantation of a peripheral central insertion intravenous catheter (PICC). The objective of the study was to describe the case of a child undergoing two procedures for the implantation of PICC. The first intervention was by visualization and palpation of the veins, obtaining success after five puncture attempts, lasting 70 minutes. After 24 hours the patient was discharged from hospital, due to contact with a child with chickenpox. After 15 days he returned to the hospital and again the PICC was indicated, but the insertion was directed by USV. The implantation occurred successfully at the first puncture attempt, lasting 20 minutes. It is concluded that USV can be a useful tool to improve the performance of nurses in the implementation of the PICC, and can promote safety and patient and family satisfaction.
