Abstract

The controversial recommendation of breastfeeding regarding women condition in AIDS age, and the recommendation of an alternative source of infant feedings to mothers who are HIV positive were discussed in this reflexive study. We also considered the healthcare professional social place by dealing with the counseling of mothers who are living the conflict of breastfeeding or not their infants in a pro-breastfeeding social environment. The changing of AIDS epidemiological profile in 1990s years increased the controversial debate on probreastfeeding paradigm; thus, breastfeeding was not recommended to HIV women. This recommendation questioned the scientific and political discourse that exclusive breastfeeding should be practiced for all women in order to promote and protect child health. Hence, the risk-benefit relation from this practice among HIV/AIDS women led the Brazilian government to adopt the non-breastfeeding to these specific group of women.
