CHILDREN WITH HIV/AIDS FROM ONE PUBLIC OUTPATIENT SETTING IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL, 2003: KNOWING THEIR PROFILE

Abstract
The profile of children with HIV/AIDS from one public outpatient facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was investigated in order to identify and analyse their needs. A quantitative, exploratory and descriptive study was conducted in a specialty outpatient, that is reference to care for children with HIV/AIDS. Charts of 45 children was used as a source of research, which data were statistic analysed and showed the following results: in relate to gender, there is no significance variation between male and female child, approximately half of them lived at north part of city (53.3%), and 22.2% were in medication regimen less one year. Mother was a primary caregiver for 50%, but 88.8% of them were not submitted to HIV blood test at prenatal time. The women did not take any kind of antiretrovirus (ARV) during pregnancy and delivery were 73.3%, but the child medication adhesion rate were 88.9%. It concluded that HIV vertical transmission was responsible for children infection, women are primary caregiver and the ARV adhesion rate is within outcome standard of Ministery of Health in Brazil.
