Communication and safety culture by a pediatric emergency nursing team perspective

Abstract
Objective:
Identify how communication process is assessed by nursing team in pediatric emergency area.
Methods:
Quantitative study, transversal survey type, developed with 75 nursing team professionals of three areas of pediatrics emergency. Data was collected between September and November 2014, using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture. This study was approval by Ethic Committee under protocol number 35231514.1.0000.536. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics.
Results:
There was not found strength areas for patient safety, due to dimensions evaluated may be part of it, which demonstrated weakness in communication process. Nursing professionals manifested to feel encouraged to pronounce themselves during a risk situation for patients.
Conclusion:
Improvement in communication process is required. Patient safety culture needs to be developed, reducing hierarchy levels and improving adverse events notification systems.
