Pediatric nursing consultation after maternity discharge: follow-up in primary care

Abstract

Objective:

The objective of the present study was to analyze the health conditions among children under 6 months of age in the nurse’s consultation in two Family Health Units (FHU), since it is in this age group that negatively affect growth and development, as well as increased exposure to comorbidities.

Methods:

Quantitative, cross-sectional descriptive research to analyze the health conditions among children under six months old in the nursing consultation at two Family Health Unities, Londrina –PR, from 2008 to 2012. The Chi-Square and the Fisher’s exact test were applied, p<0,05. Were analyzed 854 medical records.

Results:

The first consultation after the maternity discharge for 63,5% occurred in the late neonatal period. Of the total, 78,2% had updated vaccinal calendar, exclusive breastfeeding for 86,9% in neonatal period and 68,4% in postnatal (p<0,0001). The clinical problems identified: dermatitis (75,6%), abdominal colic (54,7%), umbilical granuloma (26,4%), neonatal jaundice (97,9%) and bed-sharing (49,3%). Of the total, 73% returned, an average of 6 consultations, and abdmonal colic (17%), early weaning (13,5%), diaper dermatitis (9,1%) and bed-sharing (7,7%) prevailed.

Conclusion:

It was concluded that the nurse performs the nursing consultation in a systematized way, but, still does not fully comply with the guidelines recommended by the Ministry of Health.
