Family care in pediatrics: experience of nurses in a university hospital

Abstract

Objective:

This qualitative study aimed to understand the experiences of nurses in caring for families of hospitalized children and the typical experience of nurses’ actions involving such care.

Method:

It was used as a theoretical philosophical approach the Social Phenomenology of Alfred Schütz. Interviews were conducted with 16 nurses working in pediatric units at a university hospital in São Paulo city.

Results:

The analysis enabled us to identify the experienced type of nurse in caring for families of hospitalized children, which is presented in two motivational behaviors: Including family and Engaging the family.

Conclusion:

The study revealed that nurses’ experience in caring for families of hospitalized children is not uniform, that motivation has emerged as solo practice, in accordance with the baggage of knowledge and purposes of each professional.
