Abstract
The present descriptive survey was intended to identify the index of early weaning in infants attended by the Nursing Consultation service in the “Centro Assistencial Cruz de Malta” located in São Paulo, Brazil, in the year of 1995. The study included the early weaning infant’s age, the mothers’reasons for early weaning, and the adopted feeding conducts. Data were collected from the children’s records and the results demonstrated a high index of early weaning and unsuitable feeding conducts since the weaning outset. It was concluded that supporting educational programs should be implemented within that institution in order to encourage either the practice and maintenance of maternal breastfeeding alone.
