Abstract

Objective

To describe the sociodemographic profile and clinical characteristics of visceral leishmaniasis in children admitted to a referral hospital in São Luís, Maranhão.

Methods

This is a retrospective cross-sectional quantitative study.

Results

Eighty-three children aged 0 to 12 years were evaluated. With prevalent age range from 6 months to less than 2 years. Fever was the most observed symptom at admission (98.8%). The use of antibiotics during hospitalization in 69 individuals (83.1%) and 77 children (92.8%) progressed to discharge / cure.

Conclusion

LV is widely distributed in the state of Maranhão in the children population. It is necessary to train health professionals in order to reduce lethality. It is necessary to implement health education actions aimed at the community, about the importance of preserving the environment, in view of the decrease in LV transmission.
