Abstract

The role of nurses is based on scientific evidence and based on the systematization of nursing care, which allows the design of work in relation to methodology, human and instrumental resources. In neonatal units, systematization is applied as an essential action, as it encompasses physiological and quality factors, such as breastfeeding, and the role of nurses in this scenario is essential. The study aims to identify in the literature the nursing process related to breastfeeding in neonatal units through an integrative review in the main databases with the descriptors: “nursing process”, “nursing diagnoses” and “breastfeeding”, in the context of neonatal units. A total of 247 articles were located, published between 1993 and 2021, 11 articles were included, of these 81,8% published in national journals and 18,2% in international journals, identifying publications that addressed diagnoses (45.4%), results (9.1%), interventions (36.4%) and nursing process (9.1%). The studies showed a high demand related to family guidance, encouragement, and challenges of breastfeeding in the planning of care for hospitalized newborns. The importance of nurses and the need to refine the specific nursing process for the neonatal population in the context of breastfeeding is highlighted.
