Scientific evidence on use and nursing care of orogastric tubes in preterm newborns

Abstract

Objective:

To identify key published and available scientific evidence of use and nursing care in the management of orogastric tubes.

Methods:

Integrative review study conducted from November to December 2015 from search in national and international databases. The selection criteria were: research articles; published in Portuguese, English or Spanish and relation with the use or nursing care with orogastric tubes; the selected articles were organized in thematic framework.

Results:

Four studies were selected and. the main evidence highlighted in the articles were organized and discussed in topics: Orogastric tubes: method to ensure correct insertion; Determination of the gastric tube lenght and Oral versus nasal tube use in preterm or low birth weight infants.

Conclusion:

The most current scientific evidence on the use and management of orogastric tubes is presented, such as the method for correct insertion and the choice between naso and orogastric tube.
