DOI: 10.31508/1676-3793202100005
Abstract
Objective
To describe the knowledge of nursing technicians in relation to the care of the peripherally inserted central catheter in neonatal intensive care.
Method
Cross-sectional, descriptive study, carried out in a pediatric hospital, between the months of May and June 2019, using a structured questionnaire applied to 39 professionals.
Results
97% inform the nurse if the catheter is resistant; 97% permeabilize before and after drug infusion; 94% flush every six hours when in continuous infusion; 69% observe signs of complication and obstruction at the insertion site and 64% use an inappropriate gauge syringe.
Conclusion
The professionals have theoretical knowledge to perform the care with the peripheral insertion catheter and administration of parenteral medications, however, a significant percentage, sometimes, perform this care as recommended. Inappropriate practices can cause damage to the device and compromise the newborn’s safety.
