Abstract

The present study carried through in the joint lodging of Maternity Center at the city of Rio de Janeiro. The descriptive research had an objective to investigate what kind of information about phototherapy mothers had received and to analyze if such information was sufficient for their need of knowledge. Fifteen mothers of newborns who were under phototherapy were interviewed individually. It was observed that the information were centered in the yellowish color of baby skin as a rationale for the treatment, and they knew that the eye patch upon babies were an essential care. Eventually the mothers had difficulties to accept the long stay of their babies in the warmer cradle, under the light focus. Their main doubts and concerns were the reason for the use of phototherapy and the discomfort caused by the babies’ eyes patch. It was concluded that the nursing care must prioritize the information given to the mothers in order to minimize their anxiety about the babies treatment.
