Abstract

Objective:

To determine the influence of music on physiological parameters as heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic, diastolic, oxygen saturation and pain intensity in children admitted it a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Method:

quasi-experimental study with 30 children under two years of age (15 in the control group and 15 experimental) admitted to PICU. The musical intervention occurred in a single session (duration: 25 minutes) and the pain intensity and physiological parameters were measured pre and post intervention. Data were analyzed using inferential statistics.

Results:

There was no statistical significance between the groups regarding demographic data. Vital signs and pain intensity were not significant differences between the two groups, whose tests ranged from 0.589 to 0.999.

Conclusion:

The intervention showed no musical results that differed from the control group on measures of physiological parameters and pain intensity.
