Abstract

Objective

To identify practices and nursing interventions related to peripheral intravenous catheterization in newborns and children.

Methods

Descriptive study developed in Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units of three hospitals of São Paulo. The sample consisted of 81 nursing professionals. For data collection was used questionnaire with questions related to nursing practice to the catheter installation, maintenance, and removal.

Results

Most of the professionals answered that performed between 1 to 3 peripheral punctures per shift, without the use of devices that enhance visualization of the vein. The main reason for the removal of the catheter is the intravenous therapy complication, and infiltration the most observed.

Conclusion

Some care that provide a decreased risk of complications was evidenced such as reduced time of tourniquet, catheter patency check prior to drug administration and prevention of drug combination.
