Abstract

The purpose of the study was to characterize the importance of parental involvement during the children hospitalization, according to the health care literature, focusing on the influence of such participation in the promotion of autonomy and childhood development. Were selected 17 articles, ten foreigners and seven nationals, from 2005 to 2012. Content analysis explains the category “Parental involvement during hospitalization and the psychosocial development of the child” by three subcategories: Needs of children that require parental support; Methods used by parents to provide emotional support and reassurance; and Consequences of emotional security and support from parents to children in the hospital. All articles highlighted the importance of the parents presence in the promotion of psychosocial development of children, however, the term childhood development was not present on the title neither in the abstracts of most articles, and the term autonomy was absent in them, indicating these are not the central focus of research.
