Preoperative educational strategies for parents of children undergoing outpatient surgery: integrative review

Abstract
Objective
To identify preoperative educational strategies for parents of outpatient surgical children and their effects.
Methods
Integrative review between March and May 2021, Lilacs, Medline, Scopus and Science Direct databases. Included studies on preoperative strategies with parents of outpatient surgical children, from 2015 to 2020, in English, Portuguese and/or Spanish. Descriptors caregivers, parents, family, preoperative education and preoperative care were used. Opinions, comments, reviews, theses, dissertations and incomplete studies were excluded. Level of evidence from one to seven was used to evaluate the articles.
Results
14 articles were analyzed, most evidence level 2(64.2%), whose educational strategies were websites(n=2), videos(n=3), clown characterization(n=1), music therapy(n= 1), surgical tour(n=1), apps(n=2), virtual reality(n=1), games(n=2), brochure/leaflets(n=3) and text messages(n=1). Some studies associated two strategies. The strategies showed a reduction in parental anxiety, an increase in the level of knowledge and satisfaction.
Conclusion
The most prevalent educational strategies were through videos and leaflets, with effective results.
