DOI: 10.31508/1676-3793201300003
Abstract
The aim of the study was analyse the reactions presented by children undergoing peripheral venous puncture, with and without the use of Therapeutic Play. The quantitative study was made with twelve preschool children from November 2009 to February 2010 in a pediatric clinic of a public hospital in Bahia. A form was applied before, during and after the venipuncture. The data showed significant changes when comparing the results before and after therapeutic play session. Before the session 67% of children were not receptive and did not interact with the nursing staff before the puncture and during the procedure all have shown fear. After the therapeutic play session 83% were calm and did not show anger. The therapeutic play facilitates the communication and the establishment of relationship between the child and the nursing staff, reducing the child’s anxiety and fear.
