Abstract

Qualitative descriptive study with the purpose of describing the reactions that mothers experience upon being told that a disability has been diagnosed in their newborn. Data were collected by applying semistructured interviews to seven mothers whose children have disabilities and are provided care at Associação Pestalozzi in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil. The discourses of the mothers were organized into theme units and categorized according to Bardin. The impact of the diagnosis of disability of one’s child is painful and marked by feeling such as sadness, anxiety, distress, and pain for the loss of the idealized child. The mothers reported not being ready to face the new situation. Nursing professionals can show the parents the possibilities of development available for these children and provide the necessary attention to the feelings experienced by the family, thus promoting their self-confidence in providing care to their child.
