Abstract
The presence of family members in a pediatric ward often gives rise to problems and conflicts, which involve numerous aspects, both objective and subjective. After analyzing these issues, a qualitative participatory study was carried out in the pediatric ward of the university hospital in the Federal District, a reference center for some ethnic Indian groups, with the purpose of finding effective action strategies which would improve the daily routine of this unit. Semistructured interviews and focus groups were conducted with health professionals and family members. A number of demands and proposals to improve the unit emerged and brought about changes through the implementation of simple low cost actions. Moreover, the study revealed that the roles of different participants must be redefined and understood in a new perspective and that specific strategies must be developed in order to work with the Indian families.
