Patient safety in intensive care unit newborn: perception of nursing team

Abstract

Objective:

To know the perception of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nursing team that works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) about patient safety.

Methods:

Descriptive exploratory study of qualitative approach conducted in two hospitals in Mato Grosso State capital, from October 2014 to January 2015, through interviews with 16 nursing professionals. Data were analyzed using content analysis and resulted in the categories: Nursing professionals’ conception of neonatal patient safety and NICU safe care.

Results:

The concept of patient safety issued by the interviewees is really close to that described in the literature. However, the strategies aimed to promote safe neonatal care is restricted to hand hygiene, medication error, prevention and minimal handling of the neonate.

Conclusion:

Patient safety has impact on the quality of care, reducing risks and damages, and favoring the effectiveness of care and its management.
