Socioeconomic and demographic profile of quilombola children and adolescents in Bahia

Abstract

Objective

To characterize the socioeconomic and demographic profile of quilombola children and adolescents in Bahia.

Methods

Descriptive study with 296 quilombola children and adolescents. Descriptive analyzes were performed and statistical differences were tested using Pearson’s chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests.

Results

57.1% were adolescents; 51.0% male; 93.9% live with first-degree relatives; 65.2% were from socioeconomic class D-E; 54.7% and 6.8% of parents/guardians have primary education and formal employment, respectively; 68.9% of families receive government benefits; 69.9% have 4 to 6 people at home and 63.2% live on paved streets.

Conclusion

The socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of quilombola children and adolescents are homogeneous. They demonstrate socioeconomic and demographic profiles that characterize them in a context of vulnerability, configured mainly by low social class, an aspect that can have a direct impact on their health conditions in the medium and long term.
