Abstract

Objective:

To determine the success of peripheral intravenous puncturing performed in children in emergency situation and to identify characteristics of children and intravenous therapy.

Methods:

Retrospective and correlation research conducted in a children’s emergency room of university hospital in São Paulo-Brazil. Descriptive statistics and associations between success puncture, child characteristics and the device used were performed.

Results:

The sample consisted of 75 children who required puncture, identifying success of the procedure in 97.4% cases. There was a predominance of boys, whites, older than 3 years, with adequate weight and diagnosis of seizure. With regard to the device, it was found that the model with flexible wings gauge 24G was the one that obtained more success.

Conclusion:

It is recommended the use of the catheter off the needle with flexible wings and the procedure to be performed by a professional with knowledge and skills to better material choice and outcome of the procedure.
