Abstract

Objective

To investigate, among the available treatments, the best levels of evidence for the treatment of diaper dermatitis associated with the use of antibiotic therapy.

Methods

Systematic review carried out in August 2020, in MEDLINE/Pubmed, CINAHL, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases, with the descriptors: Newborn, Infant, Diaper Rash, Therapeutics. Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt were used to level the evidence. Single-arm meta-analyses of event rates were performed using the random effects model with logit transformation. Heterogeneity was assessed by the chi-square (x2) and i-square (I2) tests.

Results

Nine publications were included. Natural therapies with human milk, honey, calendula, olive ointment, Aloe vera and Magnesium 2% stand out. Followed by 1% hydrocortisone, 0.05% clobetasone butyrate, zinc oxide paste and nystatin cream in the fungal infection.

Conclusion

Better recovery rates from diaper dermatitis involved 1% hydrocortisone, olive ointment, human milk, calendula and honey mixture.
