Abstract

In healthcare, the assistance given to children with mental disorders involves their family, both in treatment itself and in psychosocial rehabilitation, frequently also needing the assistance of therapeutic groups giving support to the carers. The goal of this study was to capture the maternal experience when facing children and teenagers with mental disorders in a psychosocial care centre for children. This is a qualitative research. Data was collected through interviews on two themes: Being a family member of someone with a mental disorder, which identified obstacles regarding the child’s behaviour, the prejudice and the daily overload, and Supporting family members in therapeutic groups, which showed that the presence of support groups for family members not only helps dealing with their children’s and teenagers’ mental disorders, but is also a place where carers can get attention for their singular needs.
