Abstract

Objective

To describe the weaknesses in child health care actions in Basic Health Units, during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

Methods

This is an exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, carried out in the municipality of Floriano, Piauí, in July 2021. The research involved five nurses from the Family Health Strategy who participated in a semi-structured interview. In the data analysis, the content analysis technique was used. Thus, the results were divided into four cores of meaning, according to the interviews and in subsequent categories of analysis.

Results

The organization of the information collected took place through the meaning nuclei. Each of these nuclei underwent an analysis in the analytical categories, built through the content present in the participants reports. The categories worked were: “Limitation of nursing care for children in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic”; “Performance of interventions by nurses from contact during child vaccination”; “Difficulties and facilitators for the development of health actions” and “Impacts suffered on children’s mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Conclusion

It was observed that child care underwent changes, due to isolation and social distancing measures. Child care was weakened, given that the actions focused only on immunization. However, it is noteworthy that the nurses tried to seek other mechanisms to be able to provide care.
