Nine children diagnosed with cancer, aged 8 to 12 years, were interviewed. Data analysis followed the foundations of qualitative content analysis Results The theme “It is better to tell than hide” expresses the importance of the information for these children, and shows that despite their fear, it is the information that brings relief and keeps their hope in the healing. The analytical categories that compose it are: development of child own ideas about cancer and treatment; fear of the unknown; pursuit of the control of the situation and impacts of the knowledge acquired.
