Abstract

The objective of this study was to understand the experience of undergraduate nursing students who used the toy in the care of hospitalized children. It is a phenomenological study, supported by the theoretical and methodological Martin Heidegger, with 10 students who performed activities at the Hospital of Universidade Estadual de Campinas – UNICAMP. The interviews were recorded from the following question: “Tell me how it was for you to use the toy in the care of hospitalized children.” The inexperience of the undergraduate nursing student led him to offer only a technical care, seeking to overcome the insecurity in the attempt to acquire the capacity to control the environment. Despite the external stimulus and understanding of the importance of play for hospitalized children, the students failed to launch into the task of playing. Still, students could reflect on the context of hospitalization for the child and that thinking emerged new visions, new possibilities of care.
