Use of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) application by healthcare professionals

Abstract
Objective
To describe the usability of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) application among Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals, measured by the System Usability Scale (SUS).
Methods
This descriptive study with a quantitative approach was conducted in Arapiraca (AL, Brazil) in June 2023. Twenty-two professionals (nurses and physicians) certified in IMCI and working in PHC participated in this study. The educational intervention was conducted in person, organized into two groups, with theoretical presentations and simulations of fictitious clinical cases. After the activity, each participant completed an electronic questionnaire with sociodemographic variables, the use of digital technologies in health, and the System Usability Scale (SUS; Portuguese-adapted version). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results
The majority of participants were female (81.8%) and had a degree in Nursing (63.6%). Regarding professional experience, 45.5% had worked in PHC for ≥10 years. The mean overall usability score of the application was 88.2±9.5 points (range: 70.0-100), classified as excellent according to the SUS adjective scale.
Conclusion
The IMCI application presented excellent usability among PHC professionals, being a promising technology to support clinical decision-making, standardize procedures, and improve the quality of child care. We recommend its evaluation in real-world care settings to measure its effectiveness and impact on care.
