Good relationships with families in the neonatal and pediatric context: definition from the nurses’ perspective

Abstract

Objective

Define what good relationship in the perspective of nurses is and identify the elements necessary for the establishment of good relationships with families in the neonatal and pediatric context.

Methods

Qualitative study that used Symbolic Interactionism as theoretical reference and Content Analysis as a methodological approach. Data were collected through interviews with nine nurses working in the neonatal and pediatric hospital setting.

Results

Good relationships with families are represented by three categories: connect with families; maintain an effective communication with the family; live in harmony with oneself and the family. Effective communication is at the core of good relationships.

Conclusion

Good relationship is a multidimensional construct defined in terms of availability, communication and self-control. Trust, empathy and do not judge the family were considered key elements for the establishment of good relationships between nurses and families.
